Blandy Experimental Farm

On December 3rd, I went with the Northern Virginia Bird Club to Blandy Experimental Farm. We saw several birds, including a Purple Finch, which was a lifer for me! Purple Finches come down here when the pinecone season isn't good up north.

We also saw several other classic winter birds - sparrows, finches, creepers, and more.

A well camouflaged Brown Creeper - We saw several on the trip.

A male Purple Finch - There was a male and a female. This bird was a life bird for me!

Male Hairy Woodpecker - Different from a Downy Woodpecker, because it is larger. Also, the bill is almost as long as the head on a Hairy, but on a Downy, if you flipped the bill 180 degrees, it would not even go past the eye on the bird's head.

Scenery at Blandy Experimental Farm.

Northern Harrier - Long distance shot.

Eastern Bluebird - Also long distance shot.

This White-breasted Nuthatch flew on a branch a foot above my head, and it was the last interesting bird I saw for the day.
